It really started the night my daughter was born 19 years ago. ![]() What made you frame this story of humanity’s future in terms of these two individuals? One believed in scientific ingenuity as the answer to our problems, the other was convinced that it only deepened the crisis. Vogt (1902-1968) was a pioneering ecologist who argued that humans had exceeded the Earth’s “carrying capacity” and were heading for cataclysm unless consumption was drastically reduced. Borlaug (1914-2009) was instrumental in the green revolution that vastly expanded the amount of food humanity has been able to cultivate. His new book, The Wizard and the Prophet, examines the highly influential and starkly contrasting environmental visions of Norman Borlaug (the Wizard) and William Vogt (the Prophet). His books 14, looking at the Americas before and after Columbus, were widely acclaimed. ![]() Charles C Mann is a science journalist, author and historian. ![]() 5/13/2023 0 Comments The Bloody Tide by Jane Yolen![]() forced to perform acts that would scar anyone’s conscience, then left to cope with the consequences of their missions alone. “The truth is,” says Chaplin, “the ending I gave Lisbeth and Duncan was far happier than the real lives of most spies of the time. Her mainstream historical fiction debut, set during the Peace of Amiens (March 1802-May 1803), follows the fortunes of Duncan Aylsham and Lisbeth Sunderland, who become unwillingly involved in a complex tangle of espionage activities that both foster and ultimately threaten their growing relationship. “After seventeen years of constant happy endings, perhaps I was ready for something more realistic.” So says Lisa Chaplin, who had written twenty romance novels (under the pen name Melissa James) by the time she finished The Tide Watchers. ![]() ![]() I've always thought it would be cool to jump into a novel and meet the characters, but I never thought how cool it would be to jump into the mind of an author while she is writing her first, soon to be published, novel! While this is an amazing book to read just for the sake of reading, it's especially fun for readers who want to become authors themselves. In the alternating chapters, you are taken behind the words and into the mind of the “author”. ![]() ![]() First, you will be captured by the edge-of-your-seat opening chapter in Afterworlds-about a girl who can navigate the thin line between reality and the afterworld. His characters, beyond a few passing thoughts, rarely reflect upon the disconsolate nature of their existence. What makes this work so powerful is that Pollock completely eschews melodrama. However, despite the unpleasantness, this is just wonderful. The setting, the people, the stories described by Pollock are so depressed, so downtrodden, and so hopelessly trapped in a cycle of economic hardship and misery that reading this can truly mess with your wellbeing. ![]() Seriously, Knockemstiff is unrelentingly grim. This is terrific stuff.but, ho doggie, can this man write himself into your happy zone and shit bleak all over it. This is my first experience with Donald Ray Pollock experience, and I'm already a devout admirer of his talent as a storyteller. But does James Bond really have a soul? In the 1995 film GoldenEye, Bond’s boss (Judi Dench) calls him “a sexist, misogynist dinosaur… a relic of the Cold War.” And if you glance at random chapters from Ian Fleming’s novels, you might be inclined to agree. The track is called “ Closet Romantic,” which suggests another humorous layer: perhaps the character of James Bond, despite his checkered reputation, could be redeemable-maybe even a secret softie. ![]() The song scans like a joke-one where the punchline is Bond films starring Sean Connery. There was a subtle element of faith to the story since it is Inspired Suspense, and that added to the realism for me. The characterization was believable, with both main characters hiding secrets from each other. Eve is stubbornly determined to find the truth, no matter who she has to step over to get to it and that includes Hoge. Sheriff Hogan Moore is dealing with being the chief law officer in Cold Creek, the loss of his beloved father, former sheriff Rolland Moore and then his life really gets complicated when DNA expert Eve Collins comes to town to explore the cold case that has haunted his life. Really good story with some memorable characters that I would like to get to know in real life. ![]() 5/13/2023 0 Comments Revealed margaret peterson haddix![]() ![]() He seems serious about leading the ship further west, but Jonah and Katherine grow more and more suspicious-and more and more frustrated that they can’t quite remember the actual history or Canadian geography.
